Clayton Product Line

Clayton traditional products: the most comprehensive range of locomotives available for mining, construction and tunnelling applications. From 1.75 tonnes to over 40 tonnes, for both hazardous and non-hazardous locations. Electric, battery, diesel or hybrid powered.

The innovative LoCo™ tunnelling locomotives, with patent pending features, provides a cost effective solution with its low capital and operating costs, adjustable gauge and high haulage capabilities. Electric, battery, diesel or hybrid powered.
Cheaper than leasing.

A broad range of Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) and Rail Mounted Maintenance Machines (RMMMs), both electric and diesel, from 900mm to 1602mm gauge. RRVs are ideal to move your personnel and equipment around the site and along the track. RMMMs are ideal where dedicated, high output functions are required.
A wide range of rail maintenance products enables you to keep your rail infrastructure in good condition. These include hand pushed and powered trolleys, rail stressors and rail handlers.
Mainline locomotive products, including diesel-to-battery conversions, special consist trains for renewals and maintenance operations, special load hauling and shunters.

Locomotives – general updates

Although we continue to develop our products, there has been a dedicated product improvement programme over the last few years. This was initiated to deliver some key benefits to you:

  • Reduce maintenance frequencies and cost
    • All locomotives are now fitted with long life rubber chevron suspension
    • Axle box design has improved to reduce greasing, with the latest designs requiring none
    • Safety and general warning labels are now durable vinyl. Should these need replacing, low cost kits are now available on the next day.
  • All electrical enclosures now have an improved water integrity design, typically IP65 or IP66
  • Improved battery plug and sockets now provide quicker and safer connectivity
  • All rail wheels are now mounted onto the axles with locking devices, to aid removal when worn
  • White head lights and red marker lights, together with amber strobes when specified, are all LED. This ensures a long service life and for battery locomotives, reduces the drain on the capacity
  • A wide range of accessories are now available – document holders, automatic fire suppression systems, Water Less batteries, autofill systems, to name a few
  • Regenerative electric service braking, to help improve the mechanical brake life and overall driving control

Locomotives are also changing in their look – certain elements are now painted black. This reflects the colours of Clayton Equipment, and also disguises the daily grime that our products can operate in!

Locomotives – traction updates

For locomotives in the range of up to 10 tonnes, we now have a range of AC traction systems to replace the older DC traction systems. These are suitable for 80v DC to 140v DC battery systems.

Although we still can manufacture the DC traction motors in-house (for example if you want to retain the same components as your existing fleet), choosing a locomotive with AC traction will give you the following benefits:

  • The system uses lower cost components – the locomotives are cheaper to buy
  • The technology is more reliable – less down time
  • Less maintenance – less down time as there are no carbon brushes to replace and the inside of the motor doesn’t need cleaning
  • Improved water integrity – there are no access panels (as there are no brushes to maintain!)
  • Improved battery life – regenerative braking for extended battery life
  • Regenerative braking – less wear on the mechanical braking system reduces life cycle costs
  • Automatic electric brake hold facility – the locomotive resists rolling back down a gradient
  • Integral speed and temperature sensors

For locomotives in the range over 10 tonnes, we now have a range of SR (Switched Reluctance) traction systems to replace the older DC traction system. These are suitable for 250v DC to 680v DC battery and overhead trolley systems.

As with the smaller products, we still can manufacture the DC traction motors in-house, but a locomotive with SR traction will give you the following benefits:

  • Improved performance – the motors offer a continuous rating, rather than a 1-hour rating of the DC motors. They also have a peak rating, typically x2 times the continuous rating, enabling you to have more power when needed
  • Integral speed and temperature sensors

Locomotives – tunnelling

For those who operate in the tunnelling world, getting a locomotive that could haul your loads for the duration of the project can sometimes be difficult and costly.

Traditional locomotives, designed for long life, are too expensive as the payback over 1 or 2 years cannot work out.
Diesel alternatives, if leased/hired for the project duration, can be cheaper. However additional ventilation is needed, resulting in high hidden costs.

Clayton Equipment has addressed this with the LoCo™.

This new product, with a number of patent pending features, realises the following benefits:

  • Less cost – typically 60% cheaper
  • Adjustable gauge – can be redeployed to other tunnelling projects
  • Low cost spare parts – typically 100% cheaper than standard parts
  • High haulage capability  – typically 50% higher for similar sized locomotives, or can replace a heavier/larger locomotive
  • Battery or diesel options
  • Compliant with CE Marking Directives and BS6164 Code of practice for H&S in tunnelling in the construction industry
  • Optional buy-back at the end of the project
